TTT Team Visits Alice Springs Airport Base
October 2015. As we stayed in Alice for a little while we took the opportunity to check out the operational arm of the Flying Doctor's Alice Springs presence. As well as the Airport there is a significant administration and visitors centre back in the CBD. Being operational types ourselves we were more into what happens at the coalface. We were very lucky to get a visit; we had tried to organise something at Meekatharra but that fell through w=so we hit up the Alice people pretty much 'on spec'. Luckily we first got on to Leonie Leach, very capable admin assistant who sorted things out for us. She chaperoned us around to meet Kathy Arthurs, Senior Flight Nurse and Adam Andrews, Senior Base Engineer. Kathy was able to tell us about the role of the flight nurse; they are one of the key people in the organisation. Kathy manages 9 flight nurses at Alice, rostering and supporting them in their roles. Adam as Senior Base Engineer has a team of 5 working under him that are responsible for the 7 aircraft that run out of Alice Springs. During our visit he and his team were working on one of the $6 million aircraft. There are strict requirements for aircraft maintenance that must be adhered to and juggled against maintaining an operational capacity. It reminded us very much of the CFA's own DMO. At Alice they run two aircraft for charter work, taking medical specialists out to remote communities and the other five rotate through operational work. They have a regular run nearly everyday down to Adelaide. Yet again we were impressed by the work that RFDS does and more importantly by the special people behind the scenes. TTT Team Visits RFDS Central at Port Augusta
The Team on TTT5 2014 had a fantastic experience when they had a tour of the Flying Doctor's Port Augusta Central Operations base at the Port Augusta Airport. Organised by RFDS Victoria's Geoff Fraser and facilitated by Kate Hannon and Damian Myles, the team had a look at the base's Comms Centre and one of the Doctor's P12 aircraft. The Base in A looks after operations in South Australia, the Northern Territory and parts of New South Wales. Running a team of over 50 Doctors, Nurses and Clinicians, along with support staff on the ground, it is a big operation. |

TTT and RFDS

The Trek the Trak crew know and understand the risks of the outback, and we try to operate safely. However, we also know that accidents can happen, and the people of the outback rely on the Royal Flying Doctor Service for medical support in times of emergency.
The RFDS is the official charity of TTT. We raise funds and support the Flying Docs wherever we can. We might be drinking in an outback pub and throwing a few bob in the tin or we might be premiereing our latest video at the Wangaratta Cinema to raise funds.
