Day 1 - York WA and Melbourne Vic to Walyunga National Park WA - Mon 12 Oct 2015
Old mate Brian Ferry sung the classic ‘Let’s get together…come on come on let’s get together…’ and that’s what happened today on TTT. Parts of the team flew from Melbourne, while the advance party who were spread between York and Fremantle, also travelled into suburban backyard Perth, to the suburb of Maddington. Planning had identified a shopping centre there that was handy to the airport and the depot where the fifth and sixth bikes were being delivered. Everyone rendezvoused at around 9.15 WA time and the un-pack and re-pack, shop and stow began.
TTT 6 was underway.
Once packed up, we arranged getting to the bike pick-up. A phone call previously had suggested that both bikes were in Perth. Brocky’s Mum and Dad, who were in Perth holidaying, had caught up with us as well so they offered to take the ride-less Joc and Brad to the depot. Off we went in nice 35 degree temperature to the location given in our paperwork…to be greeted by crickets. At the designated point there were no bikes. Carlos jumped on the phone and found out that the bikes were at another depot which was fortunately nearby on Maddington Road.
We rounded up again and shot around to the new address and there they were; two red Beemers. One had been there since Friday, one had arrived at 9.30 that morning. Now it was all systems go. A lunch at the Gosnell Hotel and we moved out to our first objective, a visit to the site where Peter Brock tragically passed away in a crash during a road rally. With some smooth sailing amongst the Perth traffic we arrived at the memorial near the crash site to pay respect to David’s Uncle. Our time here was greatly dignified by Hector playing ‘Amazing Grace’ on the TTT bagpipes.
The sun was heading towards the yard-arm at this stage, so we headed for a near-by lookout. We had looked out for a camp site and previous experience had proven lookouts to be not bad camp sites. Walyunga National Park was close and handy so we headed up there and staked out our claim. The site offered us the beauty of a national park with glimpses of the city lights of Perth; just what we like.
